What is V2L? Powering devices from an electric car, and which models have it
V2L (vehicle-to-load) means an electric car supplying the energy in its battery through a 230-volt socket: you can run a camping stove, a laptop, an e-bike or, during a power cut, small household appliances. In Türkiye, the Hyundai IONIQ series offers V2L of up to 3.6 kW and the Renault 5 E-Tech up to 3.7 kW.

Short answer
V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) means an electric car supplying the energy in its battery through a 230-volt socket. This turns the car into a large portable power source: an electric stove and fridge when camping, power tools on a building site, charging a laptop or e-scooter on the road, small household appliances during a power cut.
On models sold in Türkiye, V2L power is usually 3–3.7 kW; that is enough to run a kettle or several small devices at once. The socket is either inside the cabin or used outside via an adapter plugged into the charging port.

| Model | V2L power | How |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai IONIQ 5 | Up to 3.6 kW | Cabin socket (Progressive) and charging port adapter |
| Hyundai IONIQ 6 | Up to 3.6 kW | 220 V socket under the rear seat |
| Hyundai IONIQ 9 | Up to 3.6 kW | Cabin socket and charging port |
| Hyundai IONIQ 3 | Up to 3.6 kW | Cabin socket or charging port |
| Renault 5 E-Tech (Techno) | Up to 3.7 kW | Charging port adapter (option, 13,000 TL) |
| Kia EV3 (GT-Line), EV9 | Kia Türkiye does not state kW | Cabin and external V2L |
| BYD Seal | BYD Türkiye does not state kW | Vehicle energy sharing (VtoL), socket cable accessory |

What can you run with V2L?
A 3.6 kW V2L output runs devices whose combined power stays below that limit. For example, a 2 kW kettle and a laptop can run at the same time; an air conditioner or oven drawing more than 3.6 kW will not.
There is plenty of energy too: a 60 kWh battery delivers 48 kWh even with a 20% reserve set aside; that is enough to run a 100 W fridge for 480 hours or a 1 kW heater for about 48 hours.
- Suitable: laptop, phone, camping stove, small fridge, kettle, lighting, e-bike and e-scooter charging, power tools.
- Not suitable: devices whose combined power exceeds the V2L limit, and household wiring that draws high power continuously.
- Charging another electric car with V2L is possible but very slow; in an emergency it gains a few kilometres.
V2L vs V2H vs V2G
In Türkiye there is not yet a separate regulation for V2H and V2G from EPDK, the Energy Market Regulatory Authority; today the only bidirectional feature that can be used in practice is V2L.
| Abbreviation | What it does | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| V2L (vehicle-to-load) | Powers devices directly from the car | Cabin socket or charging port adapter |
| V2H (vehicle-to-home) | Backs up the whole home or selected circuits | Bidirectional wall unit and compatible home wiring |
| V2G (vehicle-to-grid) | The parked car's battery feeds energy into the grid | Bidirectional unit and grid-side regulation |

What to watch out for when using V2L
- Set the lower battery limit in the car's menu; when it is reached, V2L switches off automatically and leaves enough range to get home.
- If you use an extension cable, it should be suitable for outdoor use and of adequate cross-section; do not exceed the total power on a multi-socket adapter.
- Buy the adapter only in a model approved by the car's manufacturer.
- Do not connect V2L directly to your home's electrical wiring; that is V2H and requires suitable equipment and a licensed electrician.
Frequently asked questions
- What is V2L?
- Vehicle-to-Load: an electric car supplying the energy in its battery to devices through a 230 V socket. When camping, on a building site or during a power cut, the car becomes a portable power source.
- How many kW does V2L deliver?
- On models sold in Türkiye, usually 3–3.7 kW: up to 3.6 kW on the Hyundai IONIQ series and up to 3.7 kW on the Renault 5 E-Tech.
- Which electric cars have V2L?
- In Türkiye, the Hyundai IONIQ 3, 5, 6 and 9, the Renault 5 E-Tech (Techno), the Kia EV3 GT-Line and EV9, and the BYD Seal officially offer V2L.
- Does V2L damage the battery?
- No; V2L power (3–4 kW) is far below the power used in normal driving and charging. The battery only discharges somewhat; setting a lower limit protects your range.
