Electric car tax in Türkiye 2026: how much are ÖTV, MTV and VAT?
In Türkiye, an electric car with up to 160 kW of motor power and a pre-tax price (ÖTV base) of no more than 1,650,000 TL pays 25% ÖTV, with 20% VAT added on top. Electric cars pay a quarter of the MTV: the 2026 MTV for a new 150–180 kW electric car is about 16,000–17,500 TL a year.

Short answer
When you buy an electric car you pay three taxes: ÖTV (special consumption tax), VAT (KDV) and, every year, MTV (motor vehicle tax). For an electric car with up to 160 kW of motor power and an ÖTV base of up to 1,650,000 TL, ÖTV is 25%; for the petrol version of a comparable car the rate is between 70% and 100%.
VAT is 20% and is calculated on the price including ÖTV. For MTV, an electric car pays 25% of the amount in the row matching its motor power. Since 31 July 2026, the ÖTV on a car cannot be less than 100,000 TL.
Electric car ÖTV rates 2026
The ÖTV rate on an electric car depends on two things: motor power (the 160 kW threshold) and the ÖTV base, meaning the sale price excluding taxes. The rates have applied since 24 July 2025 and are unchanged in the Revenue Administration's current list dated 31 July 2026.
| Motor power | ÖTV base | ÖTV rate |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 160 kW | Up to 1,650,000 TL | 25% |
| Up to 160 kW | Above 1,650,000 TL | 55% |
| Above 160 kW | Up to 1,650,000 TL | 65% |
| Above 160 kW | Above 1,650,000 TL | 75% |

Petrol, hybrid and electric: ÖTV compared
In the same price range, an electric car's ÖTV advantage is large. The rates below are taken from the same Presidential Decree.
| Vehicle type | ÖTV rate |
|---|---|
| Electric, up to 160 kW | 25% / 55% (1,650,000 TL threshold) |
| Petrol/diesel, up to 1400 cm³ | 70% – 90% |
| Petrol/diesel, 1401–1600 cm³ | 75% – 100% |
| Plug-in hybrid, up to 1600 cm³ (at least 70 km of electric range) | 45% / 75% (1,350,000 TL threshold) |
| Petrol/diesel, above 2000 cm³ | 220% |

How is an electric car's price calculated?
Sale price = ÖTV base × (1 + ÖTV rate) × 1.20. VAT is charged on the amount after ÖTV has been added. The cars below are examples; the calculations use the rates currently in force.
| Example car | ÖTV base | ÖTV | VAT 20% | Sale price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric, 150 kW | 1,500,000 TL | 25% = 375,000 TL | 375,000 TL | 2,250,000 TL |
| Electric, 150 kW | 1,700,000 TL | 55% = 935,000 TL | 527,000 TL | 3,162,000 TL |
| Electric, 200 kW | 1,500,000 TL | 65% = 975,000 TL | 495,000 TL | 2,970,000 TL |
| Petrol, 1.4–1.6 litre | 1,500,000 TL | 90% = 1,350,000 TL | 570,000 TL | 3,420,000 TL |

Why do the ÖTV bracket thresholds matter?
- Watch the threshold: when the base rises from 1,500,000 TL to 1,700,000 TL, the sale price goes up by 912,000 TL.
- The highest sale price at which an electric car of up to 160 kW can stay in the 25% bracket is about 2,475,000 TL (1,650,000 × 1.25 × 1.20).
- A version of the same model with more than 160 kW falls into the 65% bracket; this is why some brands bring versions limited to 160 kW to Türkiye.
Electric car MTV 2026
Under Law No. 197, cars with only an electric motor pay 25% of the MTV in the row matching their motor power. Hybrids, including plug-in hybrids, do not get this reduction. The amount also varies with the car's age and its value at first registration.
The table below shows the 2026 annual MTV for an electric car aged 1–3 years; of the two figures, the lower is for the lower vehicle-value bracket and the higher for the higher bracket.
| Motor power | Equivalent engine size | Electric car MTV (annual, 1–3 years old) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 70 kW | 1300 cm³ and below | 1,437 – 1,725 TL |
| 70–85 kW | 1301–1600 cm³ | 2,504 – 3,007 TL |
| 85–105 kW | 1601–1800 cm³ | 4,868 – 5,312 TL |
| 105–120 kW | 1801–2000 cm³ | 7,669 – 8,368 TL |
| 120–150 kW | 2001–2500 cm³ | 11,506 – 12,554 TL |
| 150–180 kW | 2501–3000 cm³ | 16,043 – 17,504 TL |
| 180–210 kW | 3001–3500 cm³ | 24,436 – 26,660 TL |
| 210–240 kW | 3501–4000 cm³ | 38,421 – 41,917 TL |
| Above 240 kW | 4001 cm³ and above | 62,888 – 68,603 TL |

When is MTV paid, and what happens in 2027?
- MTV is paid in two equal instalments, by the last day of January and of July. For a new registration, the first tax is paid within one month of registration.
- MTV rises every year by the revaluation rate; in 2026 the increase was 18.95%. The 2027 rate had not been announced as of 3 November 2026; it is usually announced at the end of November.
- The vehicle-value bracket from first registration continues to apply in later years; the amount falls as the car gets older.
Is there tax on charging?
Electricity used in a home carries the reduced 10% VAT; a home charging bill includes a 5% electricity consumption tax and 10% VAT. Charging at public stations is a service taxed at the standard 20% VAT, and station prices are advertised including VAT. There is no separate electricity discount for EV owners.
