Electric camper van: motorhome options, towing a caravan with an electric car, charging

Short answer

An "electric camper" can mean two things: converting an electric panel van into a camper (a motorhome), or towing a caravan with an electric car. In both cases the biggest limit is range: the caravan's weight and especially its tall, wide body raise consumption noticeably.

As of November 2026, no model is sold in Türkiye as a factory-built electric motorhome. For a conversion, you buy an electric panel van or minibus and turn it into a camper with a TSE-approved (Turkish Standards Institution) modification project.

Electric bases suitable for conversion in Türkiye

The figures are WLTP values published by the manufacturers and ADAC; when weight increases with camper equipment and with a tall body on the motorway, real range drops noticeably. The large electric panel vans from Peugeot, Citroën and Opel on the same platform are currently listed in Türkiye only as diesels.

Electric motorhomes in Europe

• Eifelland Relax (based on the Nissan Interstar-e): 87 kWh, 410 km WLTP, 130 kW DC; from €89,900. In Promobil's test, the real range came out slightly above 300 km.
• Volkswagen ID. California Cruise (based on the ID. Buzz): unveiled in August 2026, from €60,761, deliveries in early 2027.
• At concept stage: the Dethleffs e.home ECO (series production target 2028, about 400 km range).
• Towed caravans with their own motor and battery (in the US, the Lightship AE.1 and Pebble Flow) reduce the towing car's range loss; they are not sold in Türkiye or the EU.

Towing a caravan with an electric car

In ADAC's long-distance test, a Kia EV6 covered 1,281 km with a 1,600 kg caravan. Consumption rose from 20 kWh/100 km to 36.6 kWh/100 km (about 83%) and the range fell from about 400 km to 220 km; in practice, legs of 180–200 km were driven. According to ADAC, with a heavy caravan on the motorway range roughly halves, and a speed of 80 instead of 100 km/h is recommended.

Towing capacity varies greatly by model: Kia EV9 and BMW iX 2,500 kg, Tesla Model Y 1,600 kg, Volkswagen ID.4 1,000–1,800 kg, Mercedes EQE 750 kg. No official towing capacity has been published for the Togg T10X. In Türkiye, since 1 July 2025 all towed caravans must be registered, including light caravans up to 750 kg.

Charging at a campsite

Electrical sockets at campsites are usually designed for the caravan's own needs and provide little power for charging a car; charging a car without the site's permission may also be against the rules. Before you go to a campsite, ask whether electric car charging is allowed and what the socket's power is.
