Electric or petrol? Calculating yearly fuel and charging costs
Enter how many km you drive a year, how much of your charging you do at home and the petrol price, and see the yearly energy cost of an electric and a petrol car side by side. Home electricity comes from the EPDK tariff, public charging from today's average across networks.

The short answer
What 100 km costs in an electric car depends heavily on where you charge. If you charge at home it is roughly a quarter to a sixth of a petrol car; if you only use DC fast charging it is a little under half.
An example at October 2026 prices: 15,000 km a year, the electric car using 17 kWh/100 km, the petrol car 7 L/100 km, petrol at 83.90 ₺/L. With 70% of charging at home (single-rate tariff) and 30% at DC fast chargers, the electric car costs about 20,500 ₺ a year and the petrol car about 88,100 ₺.
How the calculation works
- Yearly energy = km per year ÷ 100 × the car's consumption (kWh/100 km).
- Home charging = home share of the energy × 10% losses × home electricity price.
- Public charging = the rest of the energy × 5% losses × public ₺/kWh.
- Petrol = km per year ÷ 100 × L/100 km × petrol price.
- Cost per 100 km = yearly amount ÷ (km per year ÷ 100).
The price of charging at home
Home electricity is based on EPDK's residential (low-voltage) tariff in force since 4 April 2026; the figures include the 5% electricity consumption tax and 10% VAT. On the single-rate tariff, use up to 8 kWh a day falls in a cheaper tier; car charging comes on top of that, so the calculation uses the upper tier.
If a household uses more than 4,000 kWh a year, the last-resort supply tariff applies instead of the national tariff and the unit price can rise. Regular home charging makes it easier to cross that limit; you can enter the unit price from your bill as "My own rate" in the calculator.
| Tariff | Hours | ₺/kWh incl. taxes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-rate, up to 8 kWh a day | All day | 3.24 |
| Single-rate, above 8 kWh a day | All day | 4.86 |
| Three-rate, night | 22:00–06:00 | 3.26 |
| Three-rate, day | 06:00–17:00 | 4.92 |
| Three-rate, peak | 17:00–22:00 | 7.00 |

The price of public charging
For public charging the calculator uses today's average of the general tariffs published by the charging networks. In October 2026 the average across 12 networks was about 10.06 ₺/kWh for AC and about 13.68 ₺/kWh for DC fast charging; the current table is on the Prices page.
If you use DC on long trips and AC in town, a value between the two is closer to reality. Some networks' membership and campaign prices are below the general tariff.
Example scenarios
15,000 km a year, electric 17 kWh/100 km, petrol 7 L/100 km, petrol at 83.90 ₺/L (October 2026):
| Scenario | Per year | Per 100 km |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | ≈ 88,100 ₺ | ≈ 587 ₺ |
| Electric, 70% at home (single-rate) + 30% DC | ≈ 20,500 ₺ | ≈ 137 ₺ |
| Electric, 70% at home (night tariff) + 30% DC | ≈ 17,400 ₺ | ≈ 116 ₺ |
| Electric, all at home (single-rate) | ≈ 13,600 ₺ | ≈ 91 ₺ |
| Electric, all public AC | ≈ 26,900 ₺ | ≈ 180 ₺ |
| Electric, all DC fast charging | ≈ 36,600 ₺ | ≈ 244 ₺ |
What the calculation leaves out
This page compares energy and fuel costs only. For the total cost, also consider:
- The car's price and special consumption tax (ÖTV): electric and petrol cars are in different tax bands.
- Motor vehicle tax, compulsory traffic insurance and comprehensive cover.
- Maintenance: an electric car has no oil or filter changes; tyres and brakes apply to both.
- A home charger and its installation (if you will charge at home).
- Battery life and resale value.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does 100 km cost in an electric car?
- It depends on where you charge. For a car using 17 kWh/100 km, at October 2026 prices it is about 91 ₺ at home (single-rate), about 61 ₺ on the night tariff, about 180 ₺ at public AC chargers and about 244 ₺ at DC fast chargers.
- How much cheaper is home charging on the night tariff?
- On the three-rate tariff the night (22:00–06:00) unit price is about 3.26 ₺/kWh, against about 4.86 ₺/kWh for the upper single-rate tier. If you do most of your charging at night, home charging gets about a third cheaper; but your daytime and evening use becomes more expensive, so decide by looking at the whole bill.
- Is electric still cheaper if I only use fast charging?
- With the example figures, 100 km costs about 244 ₺ on DC fast charging versus about 587 ₺ in a petrol car. The gap narrows but the electric car is still cheaper; the result changes with the car's consumption and the petrol price.
- Are the prices in the calculator up to date?
- Public charging prices come from the network tariffs on this site and are updated when the tariffs change. Home electricity is EPDK's tariff in force; the petrol price is a default value, so enter your own.
